The Hancock Concert Series continues its 7th season with the thrilling sounds of the Bay Colony Brass on Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m at Hancock Church in Lexington War and Peace – Music of Conflict and Celebration ranges from the grandeur of Walton’s Crown Imperial and the realities of conflict in Britten’s Russian Funeral Music, to meditations on peacemaking like Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral and Barber’s Mutations on Bach. The Bay Colony Brass will perform a wide-ranging landscape of works for large brass ensemble.

Bay Colony Brass is one of the few large brass ensembles (or brass choirs) of its kind in the United States. Composed of twenty players, the group performs a broad range of repertoire spanning five centuries of brass and orchestral music, vocal music, Broadway shows, and even the occasional pop song. They play three sets of concerts a year plus two Christmas programs at various sites in the Boston area and appear twice a year at Hancock Church in Lexington.

A Joyful Noyse Creates A Mighty Fortress

It only happens twice every thousand years: we celebrate 500 years of the Reformation! A Joyful Noyse, an early music ensemble in residence at Hancock Church, will take us back to where it all began and will trace the origins and influences of the Lutheran chorale. Joyous and dancelike, in addition to somber and lyrical, they will sing and play music by Bach, Luther, Josquin, Othmayr, and many more. You’ll hear the chorales as they morph from a single line of tune to complex tapestries of sound. With an ensemble of 12 singers and players, that will include viols, recorders, crumhorns, and a racket! Dr. Teresa Neff will give insightful commentary.
