LEXINGTON, MA–The legendary folk singer and activist Pete Seeger died on January 27th, 2012. Ever since, Hancock Church has celebrated his life, music, and message at their evening service Worship @ The Well on Super Bowl Sunday. The tradition continues this year on Sunday February 7th at 6:15 in Clark Hall at the church.

“I have no idea if Pete was a football fan or not, but I imagine the entire message of the Super Bowl and its hoopla was opposite much of what he stood for,” says Hancock’s Director of Music, Mark Morgan. “We use this night to promote the best ideals of our culture and church–radical diversity, social justice, care for our earth, etc. and Pete’s music is a great vehicle for that.” The River Rock Band, the resident music ensemble for the service, will play familiar standards such as “Turn, Turn, Turn,” “We Shall Overcome,” and “This Land Is Your Land” along with somewhat less well known songs like “Sailing Down My  Golden River” and “You Gotta Walk.” The message will be provided by guest preacher Devin Schmueli, a masters student at Andover Newton Theological School, who will preach on the Transfiguration of Jesus, through the lens of changing identities through our lives.

The service is free and open to all regardless of denomination, faith, race, creed, or sexual orientation. Hancock Church is a member of the United Church of Christ. It is handicap accessible and is located at 1912 Massachusetts Ave in Lexington. Free parking is available in the rear of the building and along Mass Ave.
